Description
Much like the Shinto religion of Japan, the Shona beliefs state that everything on earth, whether animate or inanimate, has a spirit. The spirits of human ancestors are called midzimu. The spirits that inhabit the flora and fauna of the countryside are called Mhondoro. The earliest known Shona sculptures were of great eagles. This elegant sculpture is a representation of just such a spiritual force, that of the spirit of the bird. ©
