Description
Used to maintain social order, the masks of the Bakwele are usually painted in white kaolin earth, a pigment associated by the Bakwele with light and clarity, the two essential factors in the fight against evil. The most notable mask is the Ekuk and is distinguished by a flat surface with a whitened heart-shaped face, a triangular nose and coffee-bean eyes.A little investigated ethnic group, the Bakwele occupy a great forest region on the borders of Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo.
