Description

Guro masks have a pronounced style that displays distinguishing marks: the face of the mask tends to be longish while the forehead and bridge of the nose form a S-shaped profile. Animal features are frequently added to the human face and many Guro masks have a broad, wooden collar that serves as a fixture for a raffia cloak which completely conceals the dancer’s body. Fertility masks are quite common in African cultures, though the iconography symbolizing fertility differs. For the Guro, the hornbill bird represents female fertility while horned animals, especially the ram, represent male fertility.©
