Description

Carved and worn exclusively by men, Dan masks are generally characterized by a concave face with a high-domed forehead, a pointed chin and are usually a rich brown patina. The masks are frequently adorned with cowrie shells, fabric and brass. Some more elaborate masks have such ornamentation as feathers and animal hair. The Dan utilize a large number of masked figures that fulfill a variety of social, political and religious functions. With the creation of the leopard society in the late 19th century, a unifying political organization has emerged among the Dan for the first time . ©
