Biography of Artist Eddie Masaya

Eddie Masaya was born May 14, 1960 in Nyanga Manicaland, Zimbabwe. He and his wife Dorcas have 4 children: Tayera, born in 1990; Tadiwi, born in 1991; Jasper, born in 1995; and Tanya, born in 1998. Tayera and Tadiwi have already begun to sculpt.

"I started carving wood at the age of ten as craft lessons at school and at home. I had always liked art as a subject in school, and learned that my cousin (the late Moses Masaya) was a sculptor from a school magazine African Times in 1977. This encouraged me very much. I started carving in 1979 with John Takawira and I joined my cousin Moses Masaya in 1980." He received guidance from four of Zimbabwe's master sculptors: John Takawira, Moses Masaya, Joseph Ndandarika and Nicolas Mukomberanwa.

Masaya's work has been exhibited world wide. He has received awards of merit and highly commended works from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and displays at the National Galley at annual exhibitions.

"When I started sculpting it was for the love of art, and art has lead me to so many avenues and also exposed me to most of the world. I want you to collect what you enjoy from not just my popularity but satisfy yourselves and enjoy what you have."
