Letwin Mugavasi:
The Many Facets of African Womanhood
From Guruve, a small town in northern Zimbabwe, Letwin Mugavasi is emerging as one of Zimbabwe's leading female sculptors. Her evocative depictions of strong, proud African women who are also loving mothers have gained an increasingly international audience, with her work recently appearing in the United States, Europe and Australia.
She carves almost all of her work in rock known as "Springstone Serpentine" (so named for its hardness when hit with a chasing hammer or chisel, which is likely to spring back!). Her use of both rough and polished stone lends an especially intriguing quality to her work.

The mother of a young daughter, Letwin is married to fellow sculptor Obert Nyamapapira, whose own work is widely hailed in Zimbabwe and beyond. Obert began exhibiting domestically in 1988, and has since gone on to shows in London, Tokyo, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and San Diego.
