Magical Faces of Africa - New Mask Gallery
Take a Peek!

Mask 50 exotic masks from the the Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Mali, Burkino Faso, Ghana and the Congo await your viewing. Each one was chosen by our curatorial team for its rich and complex beauty and meaning. [View Our Updated Mask Collection]

All the African masks in this collection are dramatic portraits of spirit beings, departed ancestors, and invisible powers of social control. Each mask was made according to a traditional style, and some were worn by a trained ritual mask dancer.

The African masks that hang on walls of Western art museums, detached from their full-body costumes, were originally part of whole performance ensembles, consisting of elaborately costumed dancers, vibrant music, and highly stylized dances.

Mask The African mask is not an objet d'art in itself, but neither is it a simple cultural or theatrical accessory. These complex ceremonial events expressed important social, religious, and moral values for the whole community. With careful attention to the masks' artistic and symbolic detail, it is possible to perceive these same values within the masks themselves.

At the same time, each mask sculptor is not an "artist", rather his function goes much further than that of a simple craftsman. He becomes a medium, a channel and a sacred protector for the masks' magic.

Mask The majority of the pieces here on display radiate a beauty and strength which were admired by Braque, Picasso or Vlaminck, and mask sculptors can only be considered as true artistic and spiritual geniuses.

Each mask in our collection comes curated with an individual packet containing its geographical and cultural origin along with its spiritual meaning and how it was danced. Call one of our SIS galleries to assist you in acquiring a stunning one-of-a-kind authentic African Mask for your personal collection.
