Spirits in Stone is proud to host their third annual fundraising event for Global Bridges. Now in it's third year of operation, a Board of
five volunteers runs Global Bridges. Members have backgrounds in public
health, HIV prevention and treatment, and international development and
relief work.
Global Bridges is based on the belief that one person, helping
another can always make a difference. Their mission is to both increase
awareness of the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS worldwide, and to
mobilize local resources to assist people in countries most affected
by the disease. Their current focus is on Sub-Saharan Africa,
particularly Zimbabwe, in which an estimated one in three adults is HIV
positive. (UNAIDS, 2002)
Healdsburg Gallery will host Shona sculptor, Passmore Mashaya from Zimbabwe. Come and observe Passmore Mashaya create his newest sculpture right in one of our galleries and learn about his culture, folklore and artistry.
Passmore has been sculpting professionally since 1990 and he thrives on a strong desire to mold and sustain a heritage for future generations through his art. At his home workshop, Passmore now trains four young aspiring artists, one of them being his beloved wife.
He has exhibited six times in Zimbabwe and his art has been exposed abroad by art collectors. He has also participated in the 1995/96 Chapungu Artists Residency Programme, which is a program only for the best Shona sculptors.
