Dreaming In Spiral Time
David Gopito
To the traditional Shona, the past, present and future exist simultaneously, or within a spiral dimension. Instead of seeing life on a linear plane, as ordered by a Eurocentric Gregorian calendar, the Shona believe we are never separated from our ancestors, nor from our future progeny. Ancestors continue to guide and protect their families through hundreds of years, through both time and space. This artwork interprets how these deep spiritual relationships transcend these physical dimensions.

Deeply Folding
Denny Kapfurutsa
This warm sculpture portrays kuzvipeta or the Shona gesture of spiritual humbleness. Kuzvipeta means 'to fold oneself' or to show a proper humble position in deference to others and all things around you in nature. It is the highest form of respect and good manners, and indicates excellent character and profound spiritual inner strength. Kuzvipeta is a central characteristic of the 'Good Man' or 'Good Woman' in Shona society. Among the Shona, it is an honor both to give and receive kuzvipeta.

Spirit Rising
Kennedy Musekiwa
The Shona believe that ancestral spirits communicate to them through their dreams. The dream state is revered as the most powerful connection to the spirit world. Each thought that emerges in a dream state offers a clear message from these protective guides. In this work, the dreamer sleeps peacefully and while he dreams, his ancestral guiding spirits grow closer to him
