One Woman's Song!
Divine Delliene Sasa - Woman Sculptor of Zimbabwe
Delliene Sasa was born on December 29, 1967 in Mashonaland, Zimbabwe. She is
married to Rumano and they have one daughter, Rachel Tatenda which means
"thank you". She attended Nhairira School in Mbare and Rukariro School in
Mrewa. In school, she excelled in History and Drawing, two subjects that
continue to influence her work today.
Sasa began carving in 1983 and learned how to carve from her grandfather
who used to carve wood and stone curios. She would assist him by cutting wood
or handing him carving tools as he worked. Gradually, she learned the sculpting
process. Since then, she has felt that she could etch any message on stone. "Stones
can keep history for more than a century." She continues to draw inspiration
from her grandfather and from others around her.
Sometimes she dreams about the subjects of her sculptures.
Today Sasa supports her family of eight people, including two grandparents. Her
work has been exhibited in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the United States.
