Fanizani Akuda - Shona Sculptor
1st Generation Artist - A 54 year Artistic Legacy
Known professionally just as 'Fanizani', his distinctive style of curved and rounded forms are inspired by human and animal forms which are often combined. He only carves extremely hard stones. He jokes "The stones are my friends, I sleep with the stones, I eat with the stones and I sleep with the stones, they are my friends."
Fanizani doesn't actively work at Tengenenge anymore. He gets his stone from there but he carves at his home in Chitungwiza, two doors down from his friend and esteemed artist, Edward Chiwawa. Fanizani has participated in exhibitions throughout Europe, Zimbabwe, and the United States and has works in many private collections. As one of the few remaining first generation sculptors, he has created a legacy of carving his unique vision of the world around him.
